major histocompatibility complex binding

Binding to a major histocompatibility complex molecule; a set of molecules displayed on cell surfaces that are responsible for lymphocyte recognition and antigen presentation.

Note that this term does not include binding to the antigen peptide bound to the MHC protein, for this also annotate to 'peptide antigen binding ; GO:0042605' or one of its children.
