Generation of movement along a single- or double-stranded DNA molecule, driven by ATP hydrolysis.

Comment

Note that some gene products that possess DNA translocase activity, such as members of the FtsK/SpoIIIE family, can be fixed in place by interactions with other components of the cell; the relative movement between the protein and DNA bound to it results in movement of the DNA within the cell, often across a membrane.
